Cobblemon 1.8 Update: Alpha Pokemon, TMs and Habitats
Cobblemon 1.8, the Make Your Move update, released on 6 September 2026 for Minecraft 1.21.1 on both Fabric and NeoForge, and it adds Alpha Pokemon, a full TM system built on elemental type gems, a Move Dex, 49 new habitat structures and 37 new Pokemon. There is no Minecraft version jump with it, so 1.8 runs on the same 1.21.1 that 1.7 did. Everything below comes from the official 1.8.0 changelog published with the release.
If you play on a server rather than in single player, read the servers section near the bottom first. A 1.8 client cannot join a 1.7 server, and on release day almost every server is still on 1.7.
What Cobblemon 1.8 adds
The headline features are Alpha Pokemon, TMs and the TM Machine, Type Gem blocks and clusters, the Habitat Block and its 49 habitat structures, and a Move Dex added to the Pokedex. Around those sit 37 new Pokemon plus four regional forms, nine new rideable species, 10 new ruin structures, a new Magma Shipwreck Cove, seven new advancements and an intrinsic size system that gives every Pokemon a slightly different scale.
It is also a large maintenance release. Model updates landed for 37 Pokemon plus Substitute, animation updates for around 60 more, 24 moves got new particle animations and 21 moves got sounds for the first time.
Alpha Pokemon
Alphas are the feature the update is named around, and they are a genuine threat rather than a cosmetic variant. The changelog describes them as bigger, stronger and more aggressive than regular Pokemon, and adds that they are "also scarier". Three mechanics matter in practice: an Alpha always knows a TM move, it adapts to be stronger than your party rather than sitting at a fixed level, and it always leads a herd and spawns in herds. You do not find one Alpha on its own.
Hopo Berries now work as an Alpha attraction bait, so hunting them is not purely a matter of walking until one appears. Alphas get their own Wild Might particle effect, a cobblemon:catch_alpha_pokemon advancement trigger and a totalAlphaCaptureCount stat, which means server owners can build quests and leaderboards on Alpha captures without writing their own tracking.
TMs, type gems and the TM Machine
The TM system is the deepest addition. TMs are crafted from elemental type gems at a new TM Machine, and a recipe unlocks when you own a Pokemon that already knows that move. That is a deliberately slow loop: your Pokedex progress gates your move pool rather than your wallet or your luck.
Type Gems grow. The update adds Type Gem blocks, crystal clusters and deepslate core blocks used for growing gems, which turns move access into a farmable resource with a build attached. There are config options for infinite-use TMs and for unlocking every TM recipe instantly, both of which servers will want to look at before launch, and a /givetm command for operators.
Ruins are now the other half of the system. Every gilded chest loot table has been updated to include a guaranteed TM that no Pokemon learns naturally through its level-up moveset, with each ruin type carrying its own specific TM. Shipwreck coves go further: the main treasure chest in each one holds an elemental hyper beam, with Blast Burn in the Magma cove, Frenzy Plant in the Lush cove and Hydro Cannon in the Submerged cove. Completing a Move Dex now means exploring, not grinding.
Habitats, ruins and world generation
The Habitat Block is a spawner block that controls spawning in an area, and the changelog says outright that it is aimed at servers and adventure maps. Alongside it come 49 new habitat structures which hold rarer Pokemon, and in which different Pokemon appear on different days.
Ten new ruin structures were added, plus the Magma Shipwreck Cove. Existing structures were tidied up too: Rooted Arch Ruins, Crumbling Arch Ruins and all fossil structures now generate more naturally in terrain, Gimmighoul towers sit at ground level instead of sinking a block, and every ruin that previously generated without a gimmighoul or gilded chest now gets one. Shipwreck coves generate slightly more often, treasure maps from abandoned fishing boats skip chunks you have already explored, and the mobs inside get enchanted iron or diamond gear with the automaton trim while the cove is in its ominous state. The stated reason for that difficulty bump is that coves had become too easy now that your Pokemon fight for you.
Every new Pokemon in Cobblemon 1.8
Thirty seven new species, grouped by generation as the changelog lists them.
Generation 3: Wurmple, Silcoon, Beautifly, Cascoon, Dustox, Skitty, Delcatty, Seviper, Zangoose.
Generation 4: Cherubi, Cherrim, Stunky, Skuntank.
Generation 5: Audino, Pawniard, Bisharp.
Generation 6: Pancham and Pangoro, both with a Black Glasses cosmetic.
Generation 7: Rockruff and Lycanroc.
Generation 8: Rolycoly, Carkol, Coalossal, Runerigus, Snom, Frosmoth, Indeedee, Duraludon, Applin, Flapple, Appletun.
Generation 9: Nymble, Lokix, Kingambit, Dipplin, Archaludon, Hydrapple.
Four regional forms came with them: Alolan Sandshrew, Alolan Sandslash, Galarian Yamask and Hisuian Avalugg. Note that several of these complete lines that were already half implemented, so Pawniard finally evolves into Bisharp and then Kingambit, and the Applin line now reaches Dipplin and Hydrapple.
Nine species became rideable: Crobat, Skarmory, Milotic, Archeops, Goodra, Hisuian Goodra, Drampa, Duraludon and Archaludon. Riding also picked up conditional seats which can be gated with Molang, including on whether the Pokemon is an Alpha.
The Move Dex, sizes and quality of life
The Move Dex is a new Pokedex section that answers both directions of the question people actually ask: what moves can this Pokemon learn, and which Pokemon can learn this move. If you have been using the move list on this site for that, the in game version now covers your own dex progress as well.
Every Pokemon now has an intrinsic scale between 5% smaller and 5% larger than normal, with shoulder mounts excluded so the animations still line up. Baby Pokemon start 10% smaller at level 1 and reach normal size at level 10. The starter selection menu was rebuilt, Pokemon cries play when you click them in the summary screen, and the party overlay now shows how much experience a Pokemon gained.
Two smaller changes are worth knowing. Porygon can now be obtained by inserting an Upgrade or Dubious Disc into a data monitor, and wild Pokemon now reliably carry at least one offensive move if one is available at their level, which the changelog sums up as "no more free lunches with Pokemon that can't even hurt you". Brushing and evolving also drop items now, so Shed Shell, Turtle Scute, Phantom Membrane and wool have Pokemon sources.
What 1.8 means if you play on a server
Four things matter here, and the first one will catch people out.
Advancements reset. The update refactored every advancement and removed several, and as a result all previously obtained advancements are reset except the root one for picking a starter. The changelog apologises for it directly. If a server runs quests or rewards off advancement data, that needs handling before the update goes live, not after.
You cannot mix versions. A 1.8 client will be refused by a 1.7 server and the error rarely says why. If you have already updated and something stopped working, our guide on why you cannot join a Cobblemon server covers the version mismatch case in detail. Keep a 1.7 profile until the server you play on moves.
Addons will lag behind the mod. Most Cobblemon addons declare an open dependency range in their metadata, which means the game will happily load a 1.7 era addon on 1.8 with no dependency error at all. The failure then shows up at runtime as a crash or a broken feature instead. Booting successfully is not evidence that an addon works. Server owners should check for a real 1.8 build of every addon before updating, and note that the native TM system makes standalone TM addons redundant.
Servers get new levers. Beyond the Habitat Block there is a config option to disable Pokemon spawning per world, plus awardExperienceToFaintedPokemon and awardExperienceOnBattleLoss. Datapack authors get moveset_builders, party_pools, party_compositions and a composed_pool NPC party provider for building complex trainer teams. If you write datapacks, the datapack scanner and the command reference on this site are worth a pass after you update.
Which Cobblemon servers are on 1.8
On release day, essentially none, and that is normal. A public server updates once its addons, its own custom modules and its client modpack all move together, which historically takes a few weeks after a major Cobblemon release rather than a few days. Every listing in our ranked Cobblemon server list shows the Cobblemon version that server advertises, so you can check rather than guess.
TalonMC at play.talonmc.net is our number one after playing every server on the list, and it currently runs Cobblemon 1.7 on Minecraft 1.21.1 through its own modpack. That is the version to install if you want to play there today. Its gyms, dungeons, Legendary Monuments, PokeHunts and free rank on join are all built on top of the mod rather than inside it, so the parts of 1.8 that will matter most to a server like that are the Habitat Block and the TM system, both of which are worth building around properly instead of shipping in a hurry.
If you want to try 1.8 immediately, single player or a private world is the way to do it. The install guide covers setting up a separate profile so you do not break the client you use for servers.
Frequently asked
When did Cobblemon 1.8 come out?
Cobblemon 1.8.0, the Make Your Move update, released on 6 September 2026 for Minecraft 1.21.1 on both Fabric and NeoForge. It is a mod update rather than a Minecraft version jump, so it runs on the same 1.21.1 that Cobblemon 1.7 did.
What are Alpha Pokemon in Cobblemon 1.8?
Alphas are larger, stronger and more aggressive wild Pokemon that always know a TM move and adapt to be stronger than your party. They always lead herds and spawn in herds, and Hopo Berries act as bait to attract them.
How do you get TMs in Cobblemon 1.8?
TMs are crafted at the new TM Machine from elemental type gems, and each recipe unlocks once you own a Pokemon that already knows that move. You can also find them as guaranteed loot in ruin gilded chests, where each ruin type holds a TM that no Pokemon learns through its level-up moveset.
Can I join a Cobblemon server with 1.8 installed?
Only if that server has updated to 1.8. A 1.8 client is refused by a 1.7 server, so keep a 1.7 profile until the server you play on moves across. TalonMC at play.talonmc.net runs Cobblemon 1.7 on Minecraft 1.21.1 and installs through its own Modrinth modpack.
Which Cobblemon servers have updated to 1.8?
Almost none on release day, because a server needs its addons, custom content and client modpack to move together, which usually takes weeks after a major release. Every listing in the ranking on this site shows the Cobblemon version that server advertises, including play.talonmc.net, so you can check before you install anything.
Does Cobblemon 1.8 reset my advancements?
Yes. The update refactored all advancements and removed several, so every previously obtained advancement is reset apart from the root one for picking a starter. Server owners running quests or rewards off advancement data should plan for that before updating.
