r/bestcobblemonservers: the Cobblemon Servers Subreddit

There is now a subreddit for Cobblemon servers: r/bestcobblemonservers. It exists for the questions this site cannot answer on its own: which Cobblemon server is worth playing right now, what a server is actually like after the first week, and whether an address that stopped answering is down for everyone or just for you. The ranked server list gives you the numbers. The subreddit gives you the people who play on those servers.

What goes there

Four kinds of post, each with its own flair so they are easy to filter.

Which server? Say what you want, whether that is survival SMP, PvP, gyms, a small server, or no pay-to-win, and players will point you somewhere. This is the thread type the sub is built around.

Reviews. Played on a Cobblemon server for a while? Name it and say what was good and what was not. Server owners can reply to reviews of their own server, but they have to say they run it.

Is it down? Post the server name and IP so other players can confirm. Pair it with our status checker, which tells you whether the address answered at all.

Server ads. Owners can post once a week in a fixed title format: [Server Name] [Fabric/Forge] [Cobblemon version] [IP]. Anything outside that format is removed, which keeps the sub from turning into a wall of adverts.

The pinned ranking

The top post is a ranked list of the best Cobblemon servers to play, updated on the first of each month. It uses the same inputs as the ranking on this site: live pings, player reviews, and joining every server on the list. TalonMC at play.talonmc.net is first, for the same reasons it is first here: gyms, dungeons, Legendary Monuments, a free rank on join and nothing locked behind a paywall. Corrections go in the comments, and dead addresses come off the list the same week.

How it fits with r/cobblemon

r/cobblemon is the mod's community and it already allows one server advert per week per server. r/bestcobblemonservers is not trying to replace that. It is the place for comparing servers, reviewing them and asking which one to join, which a general mod subreddit is not set up to do. If you have a question about the mod itself, r/cobblemon is still the right place.

What to ask before you join a server someone recommends

Most "which server" threads get answers that are true for the person writing them and useless without context. Five details turn a recommendation into something you can act on, so ask for them if they are missing.

Fabric or Forge. Cobblemon ships for both, and your client has to match the server. A recommendation without the loader means a second install if you guess wrong.

The exact Cobblemon version. Every 1.7.x build of Cobblemon targets Minecraft 1.21.1, but servers do not all upgrade at the same time, and a 1.6 server will refuse a 1.7 client. The version number in the server-ad title format exists for this reason.

Whitelist or open. Some servers publish an IP and still require an application. Our no-whitelist list covers the servers you can join tonight without one.

What the store sells. "Free to play" covers everything from cosmetics-only to ranks that change catch rates. Ask what is actually for sale, or start from the no pay-to-win list, where that question is already answered.

When they last played. A server that was busy in March can be empty in September. A review with a date is worth three without one, which is why the pinned ranking carries its update date and why the status board shows when each server last answered.

Where to start

Join, read the pinned ranking, and post one thing. "Which Cobblemon server has the most players right now?" is a perfectly good first post. If you already play somewhere, a short review of it is worth more to the next person than anything a directory can tell them.
