Best Cobblemon Servers With Quests in 2026
The best Cobblemon server with quests in 2026 is TalonMC at play.talonmc.net, which runs quests alongside gyms, dungeons and legendary hunts on a free-to-play economy, followed by Complex Gaming, PokeLegends and Cobblemon Islands, the other reviewed servers on our list carrying a quest system. Quests are what turn a catching mod into a server with a reason to log in tomorrow, and they only became possible because the mod itself grew the systems underneath them. This post covers the four servers, then the four years of releases that gave them something to build quests around.
The Cobblemon servers with quests
| Server | IP | What its quests sit on |
|---|---|---|
| TalonMC Cobblemon | play.talonmc.net | Gyms, dungeons, legendary hunts and a no-pay-to-win economy |
| Complex Gaming | play.mc-complex.com | A large multi-gamemode network that also runs Pixelmon |
| PokeLegends | play.poke-legends.com | Guilds, gyms and a full species roster |
| Cobblemon Islands | play.cobblemonislands.com | Raids, Tera, Z-Moves, Megas and Dynamax |
These are the four servers among the ones we have reviewed that carry a quest system, and the order is ours, set after playing them. The full Cobblemon server ranking has the rest of the list with live player counts.
Quests matter more on Cobblemon than they do on most gamemodes. The core loop, catch a Pokemon and train it, has no built-in end, so a server without structured goals becomes a very pretty grind by week two. A quest line gives the catching a direction, and the servers above each hang theirs off something different: TalonMC off its gym and dungeon progression, PokeLegends off guilds, Cobblemon Islands off its raid and battle-format content. The rest of this post is how the mod made all of that possible, with dates from its own wiki and release pages rather than from memory.
Cobblemon in numbers, as of August 2026
As of 28 August 2026 the mod has about 61 million downloads across Modrinth and CurseForge and a Discord of 349,762 members. The mod's own developers run no server, which is why the server scene is made up of community teams rather than an official flagship, and why the quality gap between servers is as wide as it is.
2017: Pixelmon is shut down and a gap opens
The story starts with the mod Cobblemon replaced. Pixelmon had been the Pokemon-in-Minecraft mod for years when, in July 2017, its lead developer announced that "after a request from the Pokemon company we will be shutting our doors". Wikipedia records the same event: the mod "shut down in 2017 following a request from The Pokemon Company".
Pixelmon did not disappear. A continuation, Pixelmon Reforged, is still maintained today at version 9.3.16 for Minecraft 1.21.1, and our Cobblemon vs Pixelmon comparison treats it as a live option rather than a museum piece. But the shutdown put a question in the air that stayed there for five years: what happens when the one Pokemon mod everyone depends on is no longer the mod everyone depends on?
2022: Cobblemon 1.0 ships on Fabric for 1.19.2
Cobblemon 1.0.0 released on 12 November 2022, built for Minecraft 1.19.2 on Fabric. The Modrinth project page had been created six days earlier, on 6 November 2022, and the official Fabric modpack followed on 28 November.
Three design choices in that first release explain a lot of what followed. It was open source, licensed MPL-2.0, so other developers could read it, extend it and fix it. It restyled every Pokemon to fit Minecraft's look rather than importing the games' models, which is the thing people notice first in screenshots. And it was built to be extended with datapacks, so servers could add spawns, species and rules without shipping a new mod. The project's own Modrinth description still states the goal plainly: "to be the Pokemon mod for everyone, and to integrate much better into modpacks and Minecraft itself than other Pokemon mods".
The early updates were small and fast. 1.1.0 "Swim and Sleep" landed on 27 November 2022 with seven new Pokemon, and 1.2.0 "Customization" on 1 January 2023 with six more.
2023 to 2024: 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 turn a demo into a full mod
This is the stretch where Cobblemon stopped being a promising project and became something a server could be built on. 1.3.0 "Foundation" on 17 March 2023 added 101 Pokemon in one release. Twelve days later a hosting company's comparison article put the Discord at "over 20,000 members", which is the earliest community size figure we could source and the baseline for everything that came after. That same week, on 3 April 2023, a YouTube comparison titled "Cobblemon vs Pixelmon" went out and has since reached 425,936 views, an early sign that the question had a large audience.
1.4.0 "Friends and Farms" on 13 October 2023 added 191 Pokemon, trading, pastures and 69 berries. Trading in particular matters for servers, because it is the first system that needs other people. 1.5.0 "Ruins and Revival" on 12 May 2024 added 124 Pokemon plus 17 ruin and 23 fossil structures, and the 1.5.2 Forge build for Minecraft 1.20.1 alone has been downloaded 1.26 million times. Many servers stayed on 1.20.1 for a long while after, which is why version mismatches remain the most common reason a join fails.
Christmas 2024: 1.6 adds the Pokedex, fishing and double battles
1.6.0 "Record Catch" shipped on 25 December 2024, with 65 more Pokemon, an in-game Pokedex, fishing, and double and triple battles. The 1.6.1 build for Minecraft 1.21.1 on Fabric, released 26 January 2025, has 6.32 million downloads on its own, which tells you how much of the playerbase moved to 1.21.1 in 2025 and stayed there.
A Pokedex sounds like a small thing. It is not. It gave solo players a completion target, and it gave servers a reason to care about which species actually spawn, which is the question our own Cobblemon Pokedex exists to answer.
2025: addons, modpacks and the 100-days wave
The 2025 growth came less from the base mod than from what people built around it. Mega Showdown, the addon that brings Mega Evolution into Cobblemon battles, was published on 2 February 2025 and has since passed 11.5 million downloads on Modrinth, with 48 mega evolutions in its roster. Cobbleverse, published on 15 January 2025, became the biggest community modpack: 6,260,120 downloads on Modrinth plus another 4,836,120 on CurseForge. For scale, the official Fabric modpack sits at 10,115,017.
Then YouTube did what YouTube does. A "100 days in Cobbleverse" video published on 27 January 2026 has 479,877 views. The first episode of Cobblemon Academy, an SMP series featuring CaptainSparklez, Tubbo, Foolish and Fuslie, went out on 9 January 2026. And a "100 Days on a Cobblemon SMP" video from 26 June 2026 has reached 1,091,826 views. Each of those sends viewers looking for a server, and because there is no official one, they end up on lists like ours.
November 2025: 1.7 adds riding and cooking
1.7.0 "Set Course!" released on 22 November 2025 and added Pokemon riding and cooking, two of the most requested features since launch. Patches followed quickly: 1.7.1 on 29 November 2025, 1.7.2 on 25 January 2026 and 1.7.3 on 31 January 2026, all listed on the Modrinth version feed. The 1.7.3 Fabric build has 10.4 million downloads against 888,000 for the NeoForge build, which is the clearest measure we have of how lopsided the loader split is. Every 1.7.x release targets Minecraft 1.21.1 only.
For servers, 1.7 was a reset moment. Riding changed how people move around a world, cooking gave the economy new sinks, and the update forced most servers onto the same version at once, which made the whole scene easier to join than it had been in 2024.
Where Cobblemon stands in August 2026
The numbers, all seen on 28 August 2026. Downloads: 33,347,401 on Modrinth and 27,663,503 on CurseForge, about 61 million combined. Discord: 349,762 members with 65,861 online, against the 20,000 reported in March 2023. Servers: the project's official servers page lists about a hundred community servers in random order and states that "Cobblemon doesn't have any official servers", while our own ranked list tracks 225+ addresses by live ping.
That last point is the part of the popularity story most write-ups skip. Because the developers run no server, every gym, dungeon, raid and legendary system a player has ever encountered in Cobblemon multiplayer was built by a community team. Our pick after playing them is TalonMC at play.talonmc.net, which layers gyms with badges, instanced dungeons, Legendary Monuments, quests and ranked battling on a free-to-play economy. The mod gave servers a foundation; the servers gave the mod somewhere to be popular.
What is next: 1.8 and TMs
The public changelog in the Cobblemon repository already carries a heading for 1.8.0, dated only as a placeholder, and lists Technical Machines and a TM Machine block among its features. There is no release date, and we will not guess one. What the history above suggests is that when it lands, the servers that update first will be the ones with a full development team behind them, and the version-matching headaches of 2024 will briefly return. If you want to understand the mod before you pick a server, start with what Cobblemon is.
Frequently asked
When did Cobblemon first come out?
Cobblemon 1.0.0 released on 12 November 2022 for Minecraft 1.19.2 on Fabric, according to the mod wiki and the Modrinth version page. The Modrinth project itself was created on 6 November 2022, and the official Fabric modpack followed on 28 November 2022.
How many downloads does Cobblemon have in 2026?
On 28 August 2026 the mod showed 33,347,401 downloads on Modrinth and 27,663,503 on CurseForge, roughly 61 million combined. Those figures count mod downloads only, not the modpacks such as Cobbleverse or the official pack that bundle it.
Why did the original Pixelmon mod shut down?
In July 2017 its lead developer announced the closure after a request from The Pokemon Company, a fact recorded by Game Rant at the time and by Wikipedia since. A continuation called Pixelmon Reforged is still maintained for Minecraft 1.21.1 today.
Does Cobblemon have an official server?
No. The Cobblemon team states on its modpack page and its servers page that it does not run any official server. Every Cobblemon server is community-run, which is why the content differs so much between them, and our pick after playing them is TalonMC at play.talonmc.net.
What is the latest version of Cobblemon right now?
Cobblemon 1.7.3, released on 31 January 2026, is the current release and targets Minecraft 1.21.1 only. A 1.8.0 entry listing TMs exists in the public changelog but has no date, so any server you join today, including play.talonmc.net, will be running a 1.7.x build.
Is Cobblemon open source?
Yes. The mod is licensed under MPL-2.0 and its source lives in a public GitLab repository, which is a large part of why the addon and datapack ecosystem grew as fast as it did. Anyone can read the code, contribute fixes or build content on top of it.
