Cobblemon Shiny Odds: How Hunting and Breeding Work

Cobblemon Shiny Odds: How Hunting and Breeding Work

The default shiny rate in Cobblemon is 1 in 8,192 per spawn, and there is no pity counter, so a hunter who is 6,000 encounters deep has exactly the same chance on the next one as a hunter on their first. Servers change that number, sometimes a lot, so the useful question is not what the mod does but what the server you are on does. This guide explains how the odds work, what a hunt costs at different rates, and where breeding fits in. Every figure below can be checked against our shiny odds calculator.

The base rate and where it comes from

The Cobblemon wiki lists the default shinyRate in the mod config as 8192, the classic rate used by mainline games before Generation 6, rather than the 1 in 4096 of modern titles. You can see it on the Cobblemon config page. It is a config value, which is the important part: a server owner can change it in one line, and many do.

That is why two servers can feel completely different for the same hunt. Cobbleverse, a large community modpack, advertises a shiny rate of 1 in 2,048 on its Modrinth page, four times better than the default. Neither number is wrong. They are different settings, and the server listing or Discord is the only place to find out which one applies to you.

Why there is no pity system

Each spawn is an independent roll, the same as flipping a coin. The roll happens when the Pokemon spawns, so fleeing and re-encountering does not reroll it, and catching and releasing does nothing either. Our shiny hunting guide covers the practical side, including why anything sold as a guaranteed shiny outside of an official server feature should be ignored.

The misunderstanding worth killing is the idea that you are due. Being unlucky for a long stretch does not make the next roll better. What it does mean is that the ordinary spread of outcomes is wide. The calculator reports two markers because of this: the median, where half of hunters have found one, and the 90 percent point, where only one hunter in ten is still searching. Both are on the table below.

What a hunt costs at each rate

The calculator models five methods by counting how many independent shiny rolls each encounter gives you. At the default rate of 1 in 8,192, with its default assumption of 12 seconds per encounter, the maths comes out like this.

MethodRollsOdds50% by90% byTime to 50%
Wild encounter11 in 8,1925,67818,86218.9 hours
Wild with a shiny charm31 in 2,7311,8936,2886.3 hours
Breeding11 in 8,1925,67818,86218.9 hours
Masuda method61 in 1,3669473,1443.2 hours
Masuda plus charm81 in 1,0247102,3582.4 hours

Read the median column carefully. It says half of hunters have a shiny by that point, not that you will. At 5,678 encounters a hunter at the base rate is roughly on a coin flip, and the 90 percent point of 18,862 encounters is where a hunt stops being unlucky and becomes remarkable. The hours column depends on how quickly you can encounter and dismiss a Pokemon, so change the seconds figure in the calculator to match your own pace.

These are the calculator's assumptions, not measurements from any server. Cobblemon itself does not include a shiny charm or a Masuda method in the base mod, so the extra-roll rows only apply on servers that add them, and the number of extra rolls is the server's choice. The calculator uses two extra rolls for a charm, which takes the odds from 1 in 8,192 to roughly 1 in 2,731.

How a shiny charm changes the odds

A charm on a server usually works by adding rolls, not by changing the base rate. Each extra roll is another chance at the same 1 in 8,192, so three rolls give you close to three times the chance of one. It is not exactly three times, because the chance of at least one hit is slightly below the sum of the three, so the odds land at 1 in 2,731. In practice, that turns a median hunt of roughly 19 hours into roughly six.

The calculator lets you set the base rate yourself. If a server advertises a boosted rate, enter it, and the table recalculates every row. That is the fastest way to decide whether a hunt is a weekend project or a month-long one before you start.

Breeding: one roll per egg, unless the server says otherwise

Breeding does not improve shiny odds by default. The calculator treats an egg as a single roll, the same as a wild encounter, unless a server adds a Masuda-style bonus for parents from different origins. What breeding does do is let you choose the Pokemon. Wild spawns give you whatever the game rolled, while breeding lets you fix nature and IVs, which is how most competitive teams are built. Our breeding guide covers the full route, and the competitive battling guide explains why it matters.

The rules that decide whether a pairing works are the same everywhere. Two Pokemon need at least one egg group in common and must be opposite genders, with Ditto as the exception, since it pairs with almost anything that can breed. Species in the No Eggs Discovered group, which covers legendaries, mythicals and baby forms, cannot breed at all. The breeding compatibility checker settles any pair in one click, and the list of egg groups shows who shares what.

Getting the most from a breeding project

If you want a competitive Pokemon and a shiny in the same line, do the two jobs in the right order. Decide the spread first, meaning nature, the IVs you actually need and the ability. Then set up the parents so the good traits pass on. A Destiny Knot on one parent passes down five IVs instead of three, and an Everstone on the parent with the nature you want passes that nature to the egg. Teach the father any egg moves before you start, because they inherit from him, and adding them later means beginning the chain again.

Expect to hatch many eggs, not a handful. Each time an egg beats one of your parents, promote it. The nature chart and stat calculator help you decide what to keep. Breeding rules also vary by server, with some adding cooldowns or requiring claimed land, so check the current rules before you commit to a long project.

Choosing a server for shiny hunting

Population matters for hunting more than people expect. A busy server means more players to trade duplicates with and more chance that your shiny gets seen, and on many servers a rare catch is announced to everyone. TalonMC at play.talonmc.net is our pick after playing the servers we have reviewed, and it is completely free to play, so no store item touches your odds. The shiny rate on any given server is set by that server, so ask in its Discord before you plan a hunt around it.

Before you commit hours to a target, check three things. First, the advertised shiny rate or any charm. Second, whether the species you want actually spawns, since our page on Pokemon you cannot catch lists the ones that do not spawn in the wild. Third, whether your client version matches the server, which our Cobblemon 1.7 servers guide explains. Then pick a server from the ranked list and start hunting.

Frequently asked

What are the shiny odds in Cobblemon?

The default shiny rate is 1 in 8,192 per spawn, listed as the shinyRate value in the mod config. Servers can change it, so a server such as play.talonmc.net may run a different rate from the default, and the listing or Discord is where to check.

Is there a pity system for shinies in Cobblemon?

No. Every spawn is an independent roll, so being thousands of encounters deep does not make the next one more likely. Fleeing and re-encountering does not reroll the result either, because the roll happens when the Pokemon spawns.

Does breeding improve shiny odds in Cobblemon?

Not by default. An egg is one roll at the normal rate, and only servers that add a Masuda-style bonus give extra rolls. Breeding is mainly for choosing nature and IVs, and you can test any pairing with the breeding checker before you start.

How long does a shiny hunt take?

At 1 in 8,192 and 12 seconds per encounter, half of hunters find one by about 19 hours and nine in ten by about 63 hours. Those figures come from the shiny odds calculator, which lets you set your own rate and pace.

Is there a shiny charm in Cobblemon?

Not in the base mod. Servers add their own version, usually as extra rolls per encounter, and the calculator models two extra rolls as roughly 1 in 2,731 at the default rate. Ask the server team what its charm does before planning a hunt on play.talonmc.net or anywhere else.
